"Kumon study is the best thing I have ever done for my child Rohan. ...learning Kumon over the last 3 years Rohan has been able to think faster and has become more confident in general and progressed very well in maths."
Welcome to the Abbots Langley Kumon Maths and English study centre. The centre was re-launched on the 1 February 2010 by Shahida Hussain and is now a thriving part of the local community. The class is held at Abbots Langley Primary school, which is at the top of Parsonage Close. Children work in the classroom in the year 6 area, and there are waiting facilities for parents and siblings and an activity table for younger children. There are toilet facilities as well as free car parking.
Building Self-esteem and Confidence
Kumon study encourages children to do well. Nurturing self-esteem and building confidence is key to their success. We believe in the potential of every student and challenge them to become enthusiastic independent learners who have a desire to succeed.
Basic skills training
• Regular daily study habits allow basic skills to become automatic and accurate.
• Little and often is the key to success. A little work, every day, with lots of practice built in.
• Daily marking of the work is important to ensure that work is always fully understood and corrected before it is put away.
Through Kumon study, students should develop:
• Confidence, self belief, perseverance and the courage to face new challenges
• A good study habit
• The ability to work as an independent self learner
• Unlimited aspiration and endurance to reach the highest pinnacles
Class Routine
Children attend the centre for 20-40 minutes once or twice a week and follow an individualised programme. On arrival students hand in the completed home work from the previous week, to a team of well trained dedicated assistants who take care of them in the class.
The class work may be an assessment, or new work, which the student may need guidance to complete. Whilst the student is completing their class work, their homework is being checked and recorded by the centre's team of assistants. Along with myself, the team is on hand to provide guidance where necessary.
When the student has completed their class work they hand in their work to be marked. Once the work has been marked, students must correct any mistakes made, with help from an assistant on the help desk if required.
As a motivational tool we have a sticker system in place and students receive a sticker for each day's work completed. Twice a year we celebrate the student's achievements and hopefully motivate other students to aim high by providing those students, who have reached exceptional levels for their age with special bronze, silver and gold certificates and awards. Students completing the whole program receive a framed graduation certificate, and other milestones are marked along the way.
