"I find schoolwork easier to understand and complete. My mental arithmetic has improved and I can do my sums in my head."

Meet the Instructor

The Kumon Andover Instructor: Susan McShane

Andover Meet the Instructor SusanI took over the Andover Centre in August 2010. I have a moved from management in HR to running my own Kumon centre. I also have years of experience working with children, from toddler/playgroup involvement to working in primary schools when my children were young and co-running a judo centre in Cambridgeshire before eventually moving into HR.

I am educated to Postgraduate Level and I have never stopped studying, whether it be for career prospects or personal ambition! I have always believed in the importance of fulfilling an individual's potential. Since starting with the Kumon programmes I have found the results astounding. A strong team approach is essential, with a positive study ethic from the individual and the supporting family members.

Kumon provides a totally individualised approach to all children and adults who participate in the programme, making the Kumon experience as pleasurable as possible. There is no getting away from the fact that it is work and has to be done every day. The Kumon method is not just about academic success, it is about self belief!

I was initially attracted to Kumon because I saw it as a programme which could help so many of those children I have worked with or met years before, who were struggling with their maths lessons and failing in the secondary school system. The extra practice of basic skills together with the all-important focus on the child working at their own pace and level would have made all the difference to them.

I have also been delighted to discover that Kumon is of equal benefit to those high-flying children who can sometimes become bored with their maths and English lessons at school. I have realised that these children still need to build their basic skills and mental agility, but they also need to be challenged and to develop their self-learning skills and independence as they study work ahead of their school grade level.

I also have adult students having had requests from adults prior to career exams and other individuals who feel they had not met their potential as a child and have subsequently 'avoided' maths and English in every day life.
