"Kumon study is the best thing I have ever done for my child Rohan. ...learning Kumon over the last 3 years Rohan has been able to think faster and has become more confident in general and progressed very well in maths."
Students attend classes at the Basildon Centre for about 30 minutes once or twice a week. We will run Saturday afternoon sessions between 2.00 pm to 4.00 pm from 1 October 2009.
The opening hours mean that that the centre can hopefully provide the Kumon method of learning to a wide range of families, including early learners and others not constrained by the school timetable. I hope there is a time that will work for you.
Each child works independently on work that I have set for them. The work done in class will be marked there and then and there will be a chance for the students to talk with me individually about that day's work and to discuss the new work they will attempt at home in the coming week.
I want each child to know how they are doing, how they can improve and to leave class feeling positive about what they will attempt at home. Students will also often attempt one of the supplementary maths activities while waiting for their work to be marked – the number boards, fraction and percentage bones, flash cards or oral maths testing. We also hold regular maths workshop-cum-parties where children learn to identify problem- solving strategies through games.
Students on the English programme also read out loud to the Instructor each time they come to class before attempting their written work. We also ask oral comprehension questions to ensure that students can recall, understand and infer the passage they have just read aloud to us. Reading and comprehension - understanding setting, background, emotions, language style, themes and characters - is a skill we aim to cultivate in our students.
