"Kumon is not always fun because it is challenging, but it is always successful provided parent, Instructor and student work in partnership."
Marie Gibb, Correspondence Instructor

About the centre

The Bearsted Kumon centre is an after-school club held in Madginford Community Hall on Mondays and Thursdays from 3.30pm to 5.30pm. The centre provides a large waiting area and is very fortunate in providing a spacious parking area. Students usually spend about 20-30 minutes per subject in the centre, during which time parents are welcome to wait in our waiting area unless their child is studying levels 7A-4A in maths and/or English, when a parent/guardian should work with them.

Upon arrival at the centre students swap their completed homework for new homework from their study folders and collect their class work for the day. Their homework is recorded by classroom assistants during the time they are within the centre. The student's work is marked as it is completed in the centre and corrections are completed straight away. Whilst the student's work is recorded, they complete a number board. The number boards are completed within a certain time which challenges the mind and helps with number recognition, number patterns and multiplication tables.

As a motivation tool, a sticker system is in place which enables students to work towards prizes. Students are provided with coloured homework folders and these change annually much to the delight of the students.

An Advanced Student Roll (ASR) ceremony is held twice a year where students are recognised for their ability nationally, depending on their age and level of work achieved at the end of March and September. This also motivates other students to aim for awards next time round.

At home
Children thrive on recognition especially from their parents. The following points may help you to form a clearer understanding of the benefits of marking your child's work at home daily:

• Children love to get 100% and the more often they attain 100% with

recognition, the more they develop confidence to discover and develop their

   abilities

• Making the time to mark your child's work every day will ensure that it is done

on a daily basis. This will, in turn, encourage your child to adopt good daily

  study habits

• Marking work as it is completed will ensure that mistakes are immediately

corrected while the work is still fresh in the child's mind. A child moving onto

the next worksheets before any mistakes have been corrected will probably

continue making the same mistakes again

• Time spent in the study centre is most effective when kept relatively short

• Homework worked on and corrected at home allows the child to move

immediately onto new work and to spend minimal time in the centre

• Home marking keeps you involved and informed of your child's abilities and

   progress.
