"Kumon is not always fun because it is challenging, but it is always successful provided parent, Instructor and student work in partnership."
Marie Gibb, Correspondence Instructor

About the centre

Visits to class are enjoyable and confidence boosting, with students receiving positive feedback from Carol, the Instructor, and her excellent team of assistants.

Children are always welcomed into the class by the staff and are guided through the class routine until it is familiar to them and they are able to organise themselves without help.

Independence and self-confidence develop class by class as students' self-esteem increases and they begin to take responsibility for their own learning.

Completed homework is exchanged for new work and while classwork is being completed records are updated and changes made to individual programmes of study, if required. In class, students will be working on a variety of topics depending on their position within their individual programme. These include working on the next part of their course, learning new skills or completing an end-of-level assessment. Classwork is supervised by the Instructor who gives individual guidance to students, as required.

While work is being marked there are a range of activities to further develop understanding of their subject. These include oral testing of mental arithmetic by an assistant and times tables practice as well as numberboard skills.

Students correct any errors in their work as soon as it has been marked, before seeing the Instructor for positive feedback on their performance and guidance on their way forward. They then leave with their new homework assignments.

Each student receives a reward sticker for each piece of work completed.  The sticker system is highly motivational and just one of the ways in which students are encouraged to complete their work every day in exchange for prizes.

Whatever the activity, the aim of the class visit is to encourage students to aim high and to build self-confidence and excellent study skills that will equip them for life.

In order to maintain the quiet working atmosphere in class and to encourage our students to be independent parents wait outside the class. Vital communication between parents and Carol is maintained by telephone, email, and a six-monthly parents meeting.
