"I find schoolwork easier to understand and complete. My mental arithmetic has improved and I can do my sums in my head."
When students arrive at the centre they swap their completed homework for new homework and they collect their class work for the day. Students will typically be in class for 20-30 minutes per subject. During this time, parents of primary school children wait in the waiting area.
Whilst the student is completing their class work, the centre's assistants are recording their homework. Along with me they are on hand to provide guidance where necessary.
Once the student has completed their class work, they hand the work in to be marked. Students complete numberboards. They also have the option of reading a book from the range held at class, if they are studying English.
Once the work has been marked, students must correct any mistakes made. All students see me before they leave class, and this gives both the student and me the chance to talk about their progress and goals and I can give them appropriate feedback and praise.
My time during class is primarily for the students but I can always be reached by telephone or alternatively there is a class notebook for messages. I am happy to discuss your child's progress at anytime by telephone. Twice a year I meet with parents, if you can attend class, as well as students to discuss half yearly goals.
As a motivational tool I award stickers. When they have 10 stickers they received credits, which they can exchange for a variety of toys at class. Twice a year we have Advanced Student Roll (ASR) awards where we celebrate the students' achievements and hopefully motivate other students to aim high.
I like to think the Biggin Hill centre, being fairly small, is friendly and welcoming whilst encouraging an independence and love of learning. My students tell me they like attending class.
