"Kumon study is the best thing I have ever done for my child Rohan. ...learning Kumon over the last 3 years Rohan has been able to think faster and has become more confident in general and progressed very well in maths."
Kumon involves a small amount of regular work each day, usually about 10-30 minutes. Each student follows an individual programme, starting at a comfortable level to build confidence and to get used to doing Kumon. This also gives students the opportunity to fill any gaps they may have in their knowledge and skills. Daily work helps students to develop their concentration and independent learning skills.
Joining the Blackfen New Eltham Centre
Initially, there will be an information meeting at the student's home that lasts about an hour. It gives families an opportunity to find out more about the Kumon programme and ensures that everyone is happy with what they will have to do for the student to get the best possible experience out of their Kumon study. It also involves a diagnostic test to establish the correct level for the student to start the Kumon programme. This is individualised, based upon ability and does not depend on age.

At What Age Can You Start Kumon?
Our youngest student started with us at the age of three, and the oldest is fifteen. It is possible to start a Kumon programme as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to obtain the greatest cumulative benefit.
The Kumon Week
Students attend the Centre once or twice a week, on Tuesday or Thursday afternoons or on Saturday mornings. During this time they will do that day's Kumon. Depending on whether they are studying maths, English or both subjects, they will do oral reading, number boards and mental maths. We see all students whilst they are in class, observe them working, discuss their progress and monitor their progression. Taking all these factors into consideration, we set new goals for study. We have a good supply of fiction and non fiction books that can be borrowed by students as well.
Motivation
Progress to each new level is celebrated with a certificate and we hold regular events to mark these achievements. Twice a year, additional certificates are awarded to students working on advanced material, known as the Advanced Student Roll (ASR). Students receive one sticker for each set of class or homework that has been completed, marked and corrected. When a sticker card is full it can be exchanged for a present. Finally, regular discussion in class and six monthly review meetings ensure that students are able to measure and enjoy their progress.
Parents
Students are at the Blackfen Centre for approximately 30 minutes per subject. This means that you can take advantage of a flexible starting time, arriving any time up to half an hour (one hour for dual subject students) before the end of the session. We provide a parents' area, where you can relax with a magazine or chat with other parents while you wait. Parking is available either within the school grounds (please observe the speed limit) or on the unmarked areas of Blackfen Road between residential driveways.
