"Kumon study is the best thing I have ever done for my child Rohan. ...learning Kumon over the last 3 years Rohan has been able to think faster and has become more confident in general and progressed very well in maths."
Mrs Haldankar, mother of Rohan (aged 10), Whetstone study centre

Meet the Instructor

My name is Joanne Schofield and I am the Kumon Instructor for Bolton. I joined Kumon as an Instructor in July, 2010. Prior to this my previous 10 years were spent at Salford University where I gained my BSc degree in Information Technology; living and working in London where I trained Head teachers, Deputy Head teachers and Administration Assistants in how to use the new computer software SIMMs (Schools Management Information Systems); living my dream of travelling around the world and then settling down with my family and working as a Tenant Participation Officer for Bolton Housing Department.

Though teaching and training have always been passion, it was not until Information Technology became part of the national curriculum that I was able to do a PGCE. I decided to have a change of career from advocating and working with tenant groups to concentrate on a teaching role. I gained a place at Manchester University to do my PGCE and then worked at the Bluecoats Secondary School in Oldham teaching years 7 to 13 in Information Technology.

With the growth of my family I changed to part time working enabling me to spend more time with my children, eventually deciding to do supply teaching. During this time I went to night school to do a conversion course to enable me to obtain experience with working with Primary School aged children. I also utilised this time to obtain a Btech qualification in Art and Design, a Btech qualification in Complementary Therapies, a qualification as a Voluntary Grant Assessor and I am a qualified Nia (Movement) GreenBelt Instructor.

Upon hearing about the retirement of Allan Smith from my child who had been attending Kumon classes for the previous 12 months I was excited about the possibility of exploring the feasibility of joining the Kumon team and becoming one of their Instructors. I was already convinced of the benefits of the Kumon philosophy, seeing positive results first-hand and from other parents, and decided to look into applying for the Bolton Franchise. "The rest is history," as they say…
