"I find schoolwork easier to understand and complete. My mental arithmetic has improved and I can do my sums in my head."
Peter Rogers (aged 9), Yate Study Centre

About the centre

Students attend classes at the Redland Centre for about 30 minutes once or twice a week. The idea is that you would decide which two days are best for you and that your child would attend on those two days each week. These can be changed if your family's routine requires it.

Students attend the Centre on a drop-in basis between these times:

  • Monday 3.00 pm to 5.30 pm
  • Tuesday 2.00 pm to 5.30 pm
  • Wednesday 3.00 pm to 7.00 pm
  • Thursday 3.00 pm to 5.30 pm

The opening hours mean that that the centre can hopefully provide the Kumon method of learning to a wide range of families, including early learners and others not constrained by the school timetable. I hope there is a time that will work for you.

There are a maximum of eight children in the class at any one time. Each child works independently on work that I have set for them. No one needs to know what anyone else is doing and nor are they dependent on a teacher to explain how to complete their work. The worksheets themselves, which are the result of 50 years of refining and development, explain step by step how to tackle that day's work.

The work done in class will be marked there and then and there will be a chance for the students to talk with me individually about that day's work and to discuss the new work they will attempt at home in the coming week. I want each child to know how they are doing, how they can improve and to leave class feeling positive about what they will attempt at home.

Students will also often attempt one of the supplementary activities while waiting for their work to be marked – the number boards, flash cards or oral maths testing. Students on the English programme also read out loud to the Instructor each time they come to class before attempting their written work.

The class atmosphere is quiet and has a whispering-only policy.
