Kumon study aims to ensure that every child develops a love for learning. We offer maths and English programmes to help students of any age and ability to progress their skills and build key foundations for learning. Traditional maths and English tuition helps students progress, but Kumon goes one step further by helping each child develop self-learning skills, enabling them to tackle challenging work without reliance on a teacher.

Students complete daily worksheet study developing ability and fluency gradually over time, progressing in small steps and building confidence. They also visit their local study centre up to twice a week for guidance from their Instructor. Your child’s Kumon Instructor will set work at just the right level to challenge and keep them engaged, regardless of age or school year. This means that they can strengthen their key skills or progress beyond school grade level without restriction. Kumon offers a cost-effective and convenient way to help your child build strong English and maths skills for a successful future.

About the Instructor

My name is Madhu Bakshi, and I am the instructor at the Kumon Chesham Study Centre.

I am a qualified primary teacher and have extensive teaching experience. I am passionate about working with children and encouraging them to develop into independent learners – something I believe the Kumon programme likewise recognises and values as imperative to academic progress. Having worked in education, I know the value of good study skills and self-study habits. Due to curricular demands, schools often find it challenging to focus directly on developing this crucial aspect of learning. This is where I feel, Kumon credibly addresses gaps and supports the development of self-learning.

The Kumon programme is individually tailored for children to work at their own pace in small manageable steps, so they completely grasp a topic before moving on to the next worksheet or level. This focused approach helps to develop a child’s confidence and motivates me to ensure children flourish in their maths and English ability. Having been a Kumon parent, I understand and appreciate the commitment parents make in their child's Kumon journey.

I look forward to working with you to help your child unlock their true potential by becoming a self-motivated, independent learner.

How long does study take?

The time taken to complete a day's work may be around 30 minutes per subject. The study time is down to each individual and their current study level. Class times displayed may include a combination of in-centre and online class sessions. Please contact your Instructor for further details.

If you’re looking for something to develop your child’s maths and / or English then this is for you. It’s also so much more than that. The Kumon method also teaches consistency in approach - that, by doing a small bit each day, results will come and be sustainable. My daughter has been doing Kumon with the wonderful Madhu for almost two years now. She started just after the pandemic and the difference it has made in both subjects has been phenomenal. The approach has allowed me as a parent to observe her steady progress too. Kumon has now moved online meaning that at least for maths (which English to come) the worksheets are all completed on a tablet and marked electronically overnight. Most kids are using technology more than ever and have Kumon Connect has helped us. Overall, I’d highly recommend Kumon if you’re keen (and able) to give your child that extra booths in one or both of the core subjects. They accept childcare vouchers too. Thank you Madhu for all of your help - you’re such a delight and nurturing teacher.

My son went to Kumon for his English writing development and the work done at Kumon and the homework he was given everyday helped him in improving his writing skills. Madhu and her team at Chesham Kumon have shown such warmth, empathy, patience and dedication to my children who have attended for maths for the past two years. I have been able to have both studied here and work here. Kumon has helped me to develop my academic skills which has greatly helped at school with its personally catered programme and constant guidance from lead instructors. Working at Kumon has also been a brilliant experience with its friendly and supportive work environment, flexible hours and competitive pay. Would strongly recommend this fine establishment !

Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
