About this centre

In-Centre Class available

As a tuition provider in the Eltham area, we offer supplementary maths and English programmes to improve academic success, but Kumon is so much more than academic learning. Our aim is to help develop your child’s confidence and key study skills they need to thrive in school, putting into place skills for life.

The centre was opened in 2012 and has since helped many local children grow in confidence and belief in their abilities.

All the staff at the centre are experienced in supporting children, and background checks are in place to ensure their suitability to work with your child.

One of the highlights of the year is an Award Ceremony where students are formally congratulated for their progress. This is always a wonderful evening when staff, parents, friends and family can all share in celebrating the many achievements of the students.

If you are looking for extra support for your child we are open twice a week and you will be able to continue the learning at home with daily exercises for non-class days.

About the Instructor

Ian Foot - Eltham

Hello, my name is Ian Foot and I am proud to be the Instructor of the Kumon Eltham Study Centre.

I was a Chartered Accountant and worked in finance for over twenty years. However, my passion has always been education; I was a Governor in local primary and secondary schools and taught evening classes for the local further education college.

I first came across Kumon when friends enrolled their children onto the programme. They were impressed with how Kumon study built up their child's confidence in the fundamental building blocks of mathematics and English, and also taught them how to study well.

Following their positive recommendations, I looked further into the Kumon Method of Learning and was impressed by the emphasis it placed on students acquiring strong core study skills to help them become confident self-learners.

Following a successful application and extensive training, I opened my own study centre in 2012. It is wonderful to be able to support and encourage students as they develop academically and personally. The pride and confidence shown by the children as they move through the programme will always be an inspiration to me.

I look forward to welcoming new families to the centre.

Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
