About this centre

KUMON CONNECT available In-Centre Class available Ofsted Registered Childcare vouchers accepted

The Kumon Erdington Study Centre opened in 2012, moving to its current permanent premises, located next to Tesco Express at the Sixways roundabout, in 2018. Providing maths and English study programmes in the heart of Erdington, the centre is an embedded part of the local community. Students not only develop their understanding of maths and English, but also expand their work skills and build a positive attitude towards learning.

Kumon is a programme for all ages and abilities; current students range from pre-school to Year 11, all aiming to complete work above their school grade by developing independence and self-learning skills on a daily basis, leading to increased confidence.

The centre Instructor and team of Senior and Classroom Assistants provide guidance, support and encouragement, allowing students to develop their own independent learning strategies. As a result, many students are completing work above their school grade, with several completing work two or three years above.

Parents are updated on their child’s progress on a regular basis and can request a progress meeting with the Instructor at any time.

About the Instructor

Erdington - Wayne Muddiman

Hi, my name is Wayne Muddiman and I'm the Instructor at the Kumon Erdington Study Centre.

When I came across Kumon, I was captivated by the idea of a programme that not only enables students to advance way beyond the levels expected of them at school, but actively promotes it. The idea that a student isn't limited by what I, their parents, their teachers or anyone else knows, is what most attracted me to this methodology.

I knew a long time ago that I wished to work in education in some capacity. Initially, I considered continuing my travels and teaching English as a foreign language abroad, or taking the relevant qualifications to teach adults at night school.

I've seen children go from being quite shy, with little confidence, to rushing into class to show me a certificate they've received at school for their latest achievements.

Seeing a child 'crack' something they didn't think they could master or simply having the confidence to answer a question in class, make it all worthwhile. Helping a child develop into an independent learner who has risen to the top of their class at school is incredibly satisfying too.

Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
