The Study centre opened in 1992 and welcomes students of all ages and abilities. We are one of the few centres in the UK which offers Kokugo as well as the maths and English Programmes.

The spacious building is large enough to cater for all students comfortably. Our free on-site parking and parent waiting area make Kumon visits stress free for both students and parents. You are welcome to come anytime within the opening hours.

Students at the centre currently range in age from two to 16 years old. Students that started the programme from a young age has enabled some students to reach the top sets at school and excel in all areas of their curriculum. We cater for all abilities including those who wish to master the basics, those who wish to complement the school curriculum, and those who wish to exceed beyond the school curriculum. The unique Kumon programme pursue the potential of each child by developing confident independent learners through individualised advanced study. We believe that not only does this enhance academic skills, but fosters independent study skills which are highly transferrable into further student and adult life.

About the Instructor

Suika Takatsuka - Finchley High Road

My name is Suika Takatsuka. I'm a graduate from Keio University in Tokyo and I have been a Kumon Instructor since 1992.

I am very committed to ensuring that every child in my centre develops to their full potential. The centre is a friendly environment where students can come along and be supported in their studies. I am also dedicated to getting children off to the best possible start in their education and making my centre suitable for students of all ages.

My assistants are trained to help young students and I have a designated area with suitable chairs and tables for younger learners. I have an excellent team of assistants who also support the older students at the centre.

Each student is given work at their appropriate level and is observed and assessed at each class they attend. Parents are given regular feedback regarding their child's study and I'm available to discuss individual progress with parents.

Through running the Finchley High Road Study Centre, I have seen how children can improve in their studies by giving them the confidence to learn for themselves.

Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
