"I believe Kumon is the reason why my maths has improved, and without it I wouldn't have achieved an A in my GCSE maths and wouldn't have even attempted A-level!"
Faye Liversage (aged 17), Kumon maths completer

About the centre

The Garforth Kumon Education Centre is based at Garforth Town (GTAFC), Genix Healthcare Stadium on Cedar Ridge. The light, carpeted room is located upstairs and is set up particularly for Kumon classes before each session. The classes are run every Monday between 4.15pm and 6.15pm and Wednesday between 4.30 pm and 6.30 pm. The sessions usually last between half an hour to an hour depending on what subject or level the student is at. Each child follows a routine where we try to promote them to be independent and confident learners. They come to the centre, swap over their completed homework for new homework, and then proceed to do their class work for the day.

Downstairs, in the TV lounge bar, parents and siblings can peruse Kumon newsletters, books and leaflets, watch TV or even have a drink and eat a snack. Outside the building, parents or carers can sit in the sun at wooden bench tables or exercise their pets, other children or themselves on the adjoining sports field. They also have the opportunity to meet other Kumon parents and share experiences.

Students work independently in class under my careful observation. I am there to offer guidance where necessary. Once they complete their work it is given for correction to one of the assistants and the children proceed to do their mental arithmetic or English exercises which include number boards, verbal maths activities like addition, subtraction, multiplications and fractions. Once work has been marked, students have to correct any mistakes they have made. This is very important as this is a learning opportunity for your child.

The students then come for a one to one session with me where we review the work that has been returned and discuss what has to be done for the week ahead. We also set long term and short term goals. The meeting gives me a chance to talk about their progress and achievements and an opportunity to praise them for their hard work and commitment.

The students have a sticker record system in place where they record each day's work with one sticker. On completing 50 stickers they can select a small gift from the rewards box at the centre.
