"Kumon is not always fun because it is challenging, but it is always successful provided parent, Instructor and student work in partnership."

Sandown and Shanklin Meet The Instructor HarryThe Kumon Sandown Instructor: Harry Vernon

Hello and welcome to the Sandown Kumon Centre website. My name is Harry Vernon and I have been running the Sandown Kumon Study Centre since 2007. I have also been running the Cowes Kumon study centre since 2009.
I am a qualified maths teacher and before running the Kumon study centres I taught for over ten years. I taught English in Portsmouth, Thailand and South Korea. On the island I taught maths at Sandown High School for six years and taught adults English and maths for two years.

In my classes as a schoolteacher I endeavoured to provide differentiated work to as many children as possible. This was compromised by the resources and timeframe given to cover a certain topic. Sometimes less able students did not have time to fully master a topic before it was time to move on to the next topic. Likewise, some of the stronger students mastered a topic quickly and would have liked to move onto the next topic but their progress was slowed down by other members of the class.

So, I was delighted when I first encountered Kumon. The materials allow truly individualised study. The students are able to spend as much time as they need to cover a particular topic. This allows them to progress at a rate which is best for them and this allows them to make considerable improvement.

Harry Vernon is CRB checked, has completed an EduCare/NSPCC Child Protection Awareness Programme and attended a conference on Safeguarding in December 2011.
