About this centre

In-Centre Class available KUMON CONNECT available

The centre has been running with the same experienced Instructor since 1994 and offers maths and English study programmes.

Kumon is suitable for all ages, and the students at the study centre currently range from as young as three to secondary school students up to 17 years of age. The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.

All of the students in the centre are well supported by the fantastic team of nine class assistants who work alongside the Instructor. The early learners' assistant focuses on the development of these younger students on every class day. There are also different areas in the centre for English and maths study, as well as a quiet assessment area for students who are taking tests.

Unlike the process of a traditional tuition provider, Kumon encourages students to take their learning into their own hands. The role of the Kumon Instructor is to provide guidance, support and encouragement, allowing the student to develop their own independent learning strategies.

Parents enjoy the nearby parking area at Asda, which is just next to the study centre and free for up to three hours.

Did you know, you can now study Kumon digitally? This study centre is proud to offer KUMON CONNECT. Click here to find out more.

About the Instructor

Satomi Shikayama - Southgate Study Centre

My name is Satomi Shikayama and I am honoured to have had the joy of being a Kumon Instructor for more than 19 years, and to also have had experience as a Kumon parent for seven years, when my son was younger.

I was originally referred to Kumon by a friend who worked for the organisation when it first came to the UK, and I have not looked back since. The prior experience I have as a private maths and English tutor in Japan stood me in very good stead for my Kumon Instructor journey and I have always thoroughly enjoyed working with children and each class day. As they achieve the goals they set out to achieve, they bring a smile to my face.

The biggest joy I feel in my job is when I see the smiling faces of children who have achieved success through independent work at the centre and through being developed by my instruction of the Kumon Method and the support of our team.

The beauty of Kumon, therefore, is that each student learns every day, and I learn as they learn.

Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
