The Kumon St Helens Centre was established in 2008 to deliver the Kumon Maths and English Study Programmes, which aim to bring out the best in every child, regardless of age or ability. Whether they choose to study maths, English or both subjects simultaneously, Kumon helps children to foster a love of learning and to develop transferable skills that will help them reach their full potential.

Each child is given a free assessment so that an individualised study plan can be made to allow the student to build on their current skills. They then complete our worksheets, where they are guided through example questions and contextual clues. This method of learning offers more than traditional tuition: it nurtures your child’s independence, helping them to develop strong self-learning skills and gain the tools to help them excel in the future. Because Kumon does not follow any national curriculum and work is set according to ability, irrespective of age, our programmes allow learners to fill in any missing gaps in their study foundations as well as giving them the opportunity to work ahead of their school grade level.

Kumon caters for children as young as three, up to sixth form or college. For each class visit, a child studying one subject will be at the centre for approximately 30 minutes, and a student studying both will be at the centre for approximately 60 minutes.

About the Instructor

Hi, my name is Ashling Podmore and I am the Instructor at the Kumon St Helens Study Centre.

I first came across Kumon as a student, before working as a Kumon class assistant and training to become an Instructor. I have a background in Early Years and Primary Education and hold qualifications in supporting children with special educational needs and teaching English as an additional language.

As a parent myself, I understand the challenges in trying to find an educational program that is right for your child. At Kumon, we focus not only on developing subject knowledge, but also on gaining good study skills, independence, and self-confidence which help Kumon students to become well rounded individuals. Through careful observation of their in-class work and analysis of how their homework has been completed, I am able to guide each child on their own pathway to success.

Many of our class assistants are former Kumon students who have a personal understanding of studying the Kumon programme. We aim to ensure that every child leaves our study centre with a smile on their face, feeling that they have made progress, and that their achievements have been acknowledged.

When you enrol your child at the Kumon St Helens Study Centre, you join our family. We pride ourselves on developing strong partnerships with our parents and involving you in your child’s learning.

My role as your child’s Instructor is to guide and motivate them in their studies, though it will only be a matter of time before your child will be fully motivated themselves, driven by the feel-good factor of understanding new material and working beyond their school level. I ensure all my students are working at a pace ‘just right’ for them, and each student has personalised goals throughout their Kumon journey. I am also always on hand to support them in developing independent study skills.

If you would like to find out how Kumon can benefit your child, please get in touch and we can have an informal chat. I look forward to welcoming you and your child to our Kumon family.

Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
