The centre was opened in 2010 and is located at the 4th Ewell Scout Hall.

Whilst Kumon is suitable for students of all ages and abilities, those at the centre currently range from three to 15 years old. The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.

The study centre has a small, friendly team of experienced, approachable and caring assistants who work alongside the Instructor. They treat all students as individuals and support the students' development. There is at least one assistant on every table cluster; on which there are approximately six seats, to maintain an excellent ratio of assistants to students.

Irrespective of their age or school year, there are distinct earlier and higher learner tables, enabling students to receive the requisite level of guidance through their individualised learning programmes.

Similar to other tuition providers the Kumon programmes focus on essential academic skills, but we go one step further by developing a child’s independent study skills, needed for school, university, employment and other aspects of adult life.

About the Instructor

My name is Jessica Grante and I established the Stoneleigh study centre in May 2010. Having graduated with a psychology degree before qualifying as a chartered accountant I decided I wanted to have a more child-focused career, so I retrained as a primary school teacher.

I was a Kumon parent for several years before training to be an Instructor. I could see the benefits my eldest was enjoying: he seemed to have a natural affinity for all things mathematical and he was working well ahead of national average expectations. The programme perfectly consolidated his mental arithmetic skills and flexibility of thinking, making him a more strategic and efficient mathematician.

At the centre, we nurture children to be intrinsically motivated, whilst offering feedback and praise. Kumon is a real joint venture between student, parent and Instructor, and I feel privileged to facilitate students' improvements, both academically, and in terms of confidence and general study skills, including fostering a passion for learning new things and not being put off by challenges.

My greatest reward is to see children progressing through each level within the study programme. I truly believe that every single child has the potential to learn and improve in a structured and supportive environment.

Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
