Students of all ages and abilities attend the Kumon Stratford-upon-Avon Study Centre.

Our students who have studied the Kumon Maths and English Programmes from year four onwards have achieved great results in the 11+ exam, which is taken at the start of year six.

The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes enable children to reach their maximum potential by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.

Through daily study, both at the study centre and independently at home, Kumon goes further than traditional methods of tuition by ensuring students maintain a level of development every day.

Kumon is particularly suitable for children who have fallen behind in their studies because of COVID related remote schooling. In addition to this it is equally effective for high achieving children who need an extra challenge that their current schooling does not provide.

About the Instructor

My name is Tom Smith and I worked as a Kumon Class Assistant for three years while attending King Edward VI Grammar School. Following this I obtained a first-class master’s degree in Theoretical Physics from the University of Nottingham. Upon completing my degree, my passion for education and teaching, combined with my knowledge of the effectiveness of the Kumon Programmes, brought me back to Stratford-upon-Avon to apply to become a Kumon Instructor.

I have lived in Stratford-upon-Avon my entire life, and therefore I am very familiar with all of the local schools as well as the importance of excelling in the 11+ exam. The Kumon Programmes are fantastic at facilitating this as they develop a great foundation of knowledge in both Maths and English. In addition to this, Kumon helps greatly to develop the ability to self-learn and solve problems involving unfamiliar content.

I look forward to working with you and your children to help them achieve their maximum potential.

How long does study take?

The time taken to complete a day's work may be around 30 minutes per subject. The study time is down to each individual and their current study level. Class times displayed may include a combination of in-centre and online class sessions. Please contact your Instructor for further details.

Kumon English has helped my children a lot to improve their fluency and confidence in English. Tom, the instructor of this centre is always very kind, supportive and encouraging. My daughter has been doing Kumon with Tom for about 3 months now and getting on really well. Even in such a short space of time, we are seeing an improvement in her maths which is then having a positive knock-on affect at school which is what we were hoping for. She enjoys doing the homework and loves going into class on a Saturday morning. Tom and all of his team are fantastic with all of the children and I would thoroughly recommend him and the centre.

My two boys aged 10 and 8 joined Kumon (Stratford) in mid-January 2023. Here we are 7 weeks later and both boys are flourishing. Each evening they complete small, manageable chunks of both English and Maths. To date the work has been embedding and recalling knowledge and they have progressed quickly. Moving forward the challenge is increasing and soon they will both be working at a level above their age. As a result their confidence is growing, which is fantastic to see as a parent. They are encouraged to get themselves ‘unstuck’ independently and problem solve but Tom and his team are there to catch them when they need support and guidance. As a Deputy Headteacher of a large secondary school, I have been impressed by Tom’s dedication and care shown to his students. He is clearly an excellent, skilled and knowledgeable practitioner who wants the very best for the young people who work with him. My only regret is that we didn’t know about Kumon sooner! We look forward to the journey ahead.

Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
