Welcome to the Urmston study centre, located just in the heart of the community and is close to St Monica's Primary School, Acre Hall Primary School and Wellacre Secondary School.

Kumon is suitable for all abilities and ages, and most of our students attend schools within the area and live in the local community. We currently have students aged between three to 15 years old. Younger students benefit from the dedicated early learner area and assistants where one-to-one support is available if needed. Our students have access to a wide range of books (many of which are on the Kumon Recommended Reading List).

There are six members of staff who are passionate about each child’s individual needs and specialise in different roles supporting early learners, or marking and recording class work.

The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study. Unlike the process of a traditional tuition provider, Kumon encourages students to take their learning into their own hands.

The Kumon programmes are not specifically designed to match the style of questions or every exact topic covered in the 11+ maths or English tests. As Kumon is an international organisation, our programmes do not directly follow any country's school curriculum. Equipped with these skills for life, our students are able to excel in all other aspects of their school, academic or even extracurricular life, be it in different subjects, like science or history, project work, or the 11+ exams.

Kumon students are used to working in a quiet, focused and timed conditions in their Kumon study class. Traditionally, our students are not at all phased when faced with an 11+ exam as they are used to regular and thorough tests at end of each level with Kumon. As 11+ exams are designed to be increasingly more ‘tutor-proof’, the skills and learning at Kumon become more relevant. Being able to confidently rely on their strong foundations in maths and English means that reasoning and working through examples in an 11+ test comes naturally.

So, we are certainly equipping our students with many of the skills required for success in this, and many other exams.

About the Instructor

Sharon Carlin - Urmston

Hello, my name is Sharon Carlin and I am the Instructor at the Kumon Urmston Study Centre.

Before I became an Instructor I was a primary school teacher and was fortunate to spend five years at Urmston Junior School, which is where I first heard of Kumon. After taking a break from teaching to raise my family, I contacted Kumon and the rest is history!

The Kumon programmes suit all levels of ability and I have seen first-hand how children develop their confidence, concentration and focus as they develop independent learning skills. My role as an Instructor is to help nurture students into confident, independent learners.

The most rewarding part of my role is when I see students, who at first may lack confidence, have poor study skills, poor posture or poor focus, realise they can improve their abilities in maths and/or English. It is extremely satisfying when a child tells me they have moved up a group at school or that they got top marks in their mental maths test. I have students who hated reading and now they always have their head stuck in a book! I have other students who want to study beyond their year group. Moments like this, really make my job so rewarding.

Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
