Saturday classes are held at 10 Maurepas Way, Waterlooville, PO7 7AY from 9am - 11am

The Kumon Waterlooville Study Centre has offered the Kumon Maths and English Programmes to children of all ages and abilities since 2000. It is a thriving, vibrant centre and currently has students from ages four to 18 years old.

Students attend classes at the centre once or twice a week, for approximately 30 minutes per subject studied. They are supported by the Instructor and eight highly trained assistants who observe and guide the students as they study.

In class, new students and young learners work in a dedicated area alongside two assistants. Students enrolled on the English programme have their oral reading skills assessed, while those on the maths programme are tested on their mental arithmetic and times tables skills.

Through daily study, both at the study centre and independently at home, Kumon goes further than traditional methods of tuition by ensuring students maintain a level of development every day.
The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.

About the Instructor

My name is Maria Woodford and I am the Instructor at the Waterlooville Study Centre.

I spent a lifetime in education, being a teacher in both state and private schools and a university lecturer. I am educated to post-graduate level (in literature and in law) and education has always been very important to me.

The progress of my daughter Nadia in both the Kumon maths and English Programmes inspired me to become a Kumon Instructor. She gradually turned into a confident, independent learner who had just started secondary school and was not afraid of challenges lying ahead. This is the most invaluable skill that she has mastered so far.

My ambition and passion is to develop students’ ability to grasp the knowledge and understanding of the subject, as well as develop the necessary study skills which are essential in school and beyond.

My favourite part of being a Kumon Instructor is supporting a child in class when he/she tackles a new topic, overcomes challenges or passes a test. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing a sense of achievement on a child’s face.

I am dedicated to setting goals for your child, both academic and non-academic, and providing them with challenges that they need to nurture and grow into a confident, independent learner.

Please give me a call and we will discuss this further.

Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
