About this centre

In-Centre Class available

The centre was opened in 1996, and is now a thriving and important part of the local community.

The majority of students live in the local area and attend local schools. The centre has a friendly atmosphere and a dedicated team is on hand to assist maths and English students if required.

At the Whetstone Study Centre, there are students of all ages and abilities; at present, the youngest student is four years old and the oldest student is 18. The longest standing student has attended the centre for the past eight-and-a-half years and is excelling on the maths programme.

The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.

Kumon should not be considered a traditional tuition provider as, rather than ‘teaching’ students, we encourage them to become independent learners who feel confident in their own abilities and able to face unfamiliar work.

About the Instructor

Michelle Mandak - Whetstone

My name is Michelle Mandak and I have been the Instructor of the Kumon Whetstone Study Centre since 1996. Also, being a Kumon parent, I know first-hand the benefits of long-term Kumon study.

It is very exciting to be able to help those students who are struggling with their school lessons, as well as challenge those students who are excelling in maths and English. I love the opportunity to be involved with the education of individual students over many years, often seeing them develop their skills from primary school to GCSE level and beyond.

At the 20th anniversary of Kumon Whetstone I received a Long Service Certificate award. I have also received awards for nurturing students right through to completion of the Kumon Maths and English Study Programmes, which I feel celebrate the commitment I dedicate to my centre.

I have an excellent team of assistants, some of whom have been working with me for more than fifteen years. My staff and I work hard to ensure that all our students develop their maths and English skills and become confident, independent learners. I would therefore like to publicly thank all my staff for helping me to make the Whetstone Study Centre a success.

I am very proud that for several consecutive years I have achieved Elite Kumon Instructor status. This high accolade is based on the quality of my instruction and students' progress at my centre.
For the school year 2019 to 2020 I am ranked 18 out of 1122 Instructors across Kumon Europe and Africa.

Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
