About this centre

Online Class available In-Centre Class available

The centre which provides maths and English study programmes for students of all ages and abilities.

The centre was established over 20 years ago and it has been run by Instructor Halina Alderton for nearly 12 years. Students can choose to attend either one of two sessions per week, and there are two marking assistants from local high schools at each session, each with an excellent command of English and maths.

The study centre comprises students from various backgrounds with a broad range of abilities and the unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.

Parents often give feedback to the Instructor about how their son or daughter has been moved to a higher group at school. Every year, several of the students apply for scholarships to local public schools, and to the top universities in country.

Kumon should not be considered a traditional tuition provider as, rather than ‘teaching’ students, we encourage them to become independent learners who feel confident in their own abilities and able to face unfamiliar work.

About the Instructor

My name is Halina Alderton. I have been a Kumon Instructor for almost 12 years, and before that I was a Kumon parent for almost ten years. The job of a Kumon Instructor is an exciting and energising experience, and I enjoy meeting young, energetic individuals who are willing to learn and to ultimately succeed. Over the years, I have met lots of different children from various backgrounds, and I believe that these experiences have moulded me into a flexible and open-minded person.

Having degree-level qualifications in sciences, and having learnt and taught languages in the past, I naturally took an interest in the Kumon programmes. Soon after enrolling my child in Kumon maths, I started to educate myself in child psychology to satisfy my own personal interests, and in doing so I left behind some pre-conceived ideas. I believe that progressing young individuals' ability in maths and English can have a great impact upon their confidence and ability in both academic and other non-academic areas.

I constantly witness the success of students who, with the Kumon programmes, have had a chance to develop their learning, confidence and independence, to gain a solid foundation for academic success, to build their character through perseverance, and to ultimately realise their full potential.

Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
