About this centre

Since 2004, the centre has been helping students achieve success. The centre prides itself on delivering the Kumon Maths and English Programmes with proven results.

The students at the centre, who currently range from pre-school to year 11, are helped to discover their full potential and develop skills to study work not yet covered at school level. Students are encouraged to attempt work by themselves first and then are guided through the process.

In pursuit of the right study skills, the centre trains students to work independently as quickly and accurately as possible, to have absolute focus and concentration and to read instructions and examples carefully. Students are observed weekly and certain topics not yet mastered are reviewed.

Alongside the Instructor, there are at least nine staff members at each class who undergo regular training to ensure that their delivery of the Kumon programme is at its optimum. Staff at the centre are devoted to each child’s development and growth.

Similar to other tuition providers the Kumon programmes focus on essential academic skills, but we go one step further by developing a child’s independent study skills, needed for school, university, employment and other aspects of adult life.

About the Instructor

Woolwich - Laura Obasi

My name is Laura Obasi and I'm the Instructor at the Kumon Woolwich Study Centre. My role is to support your child as he or she goes through their Kumon journey. I enjoy seeing students advance to work not yet covered in school and which they enjoy doing. I am deeply committed to my centre's educational mission to help each student reach and perform at their full potential. I am continually amazed at the work being done by the students at my centre.

My interest in becoming a Kumon Instructor started when my son joined the programme at the age of four. Immediately, I noted the difference it made in his mastery of maths and English and how he developed self-confidence and discipline. His ongoing success is achieved through his own dedication and hard work and I aim to instil these values in each of my students. I truly believe in the Kumon method and the skills, attitude and academic benefits it supports in each child.

Each student is important to me and I care not only about their academic advancement but about their overall well-being. My greatest achievements are enabling my students to gain self-confidence, allowing them to become independent self-learners and helping them to build strong study habits.

I have a true passion for education and a desire to help children succeed in life.

Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
