Kumon celebrates Halloween with Fang-tastic Friday

“Being such an amateur carver, I really didn’t expect to win, but was very excited and grateful when my pumpkin was selected as the winner.”

Friday 31 October was of course Halloween, a great opportunity for us to have a little fun whilst raising funds for our Corporate Social Responsibility partner, the National Literacy Trust – so we invited Associates to take part in Fang-tastic Friday!

Many dressed down and some dressed up; characters from clowns to vampires, to Hocus Pocus witches and even a fairy roamed around the offices throughout the UK; an array of devilishly tempting treats were on sale throughout the day; and a ghostly quiz caused headaches!

A terror-ific pumpkin carving contest took place, where Associates amazed us with their intricate carving skills! Entries included: a Creepy Camper, Nightmare before Christmas, The Mad Hatter, Tinkerhell and Scary Poppins! The masterpieces were judged by our very own wizard and witch, who scored entries on creativity, originality and the ability to stand out from the pack! Bonus points were given for items inspired by the Recommended Reading List.

Emma Digby, Schools Liaison Officer (and Kumon 2014 terror-ific pumpkin carving winner) said: “I really enjoyed carving this, my first ever Halloween pumpkin! I started by finding a book I thought was quite unique on one of the higher levels of our Recommended Reading List, and one I hoped would inspire colleagues to read because of its unusual name. I then set about designing the picture. Being such an amateur carver, I really didn’t expect to win, but was very excited and grateful when my pumpkin was selected as the winner. Most of all, however, it was just amazing to help raise funds for a great organisation and to support them in the fantastic work they do across the country.”

All of these fun and games have resulted in us collectively raising £150 for the National Literacy Trust, in support of their work to improve literacy skills for disadvantaged children, young people and families in the UK.

A big thank you to all Associates who participated in these activities. You can view more photos from Fang-tastic Friday over on our Facebook page and donations can be made via our JustGiving page at: justgiving.com/company/kumon.
