Throughout August, UK parents and guardians had the opportunity to enter Kumon UK’s competition to win a children’s book each week for a year. The competition was held in celebration of 15 years of the Kumon English Programme in the UK.
The entries came in their thousands, with each entrant writing up to 100 words about why they encourage their child to read. The judging panel were blown away by the inspiring entries and had a very tough job narrowing the entries down to the final winner.
The winning entry came from Rhiannon Redman from Bristol, who is absolutely overjoyed to have won 52 books for her son Matthew. Matthew adores books and frequently reads to his three-year-old sister. Matthew and Rhiannon will be able to select four to five new books each month as his reading skills and appetite for reading develop. We will be delivering the first package close to his sixth birthday, next month.
Thank you to all the parents and guardians who entered our competition. We look forward to sharing your passionate entries with our community, to spread your love of reading throughout the country. Below you can read Rhiannon’s entry. We are sure you will find her words as motivating and inspiring as we did.
“I encourage my child to read because it gives him the freedom to escape into another world! When he first started reading I told him it was like being given a key and it was up to him how much he wanted to unlock words. He has really responded and loves now being able to share this new world with his sister. In a world where technology seems to be replacing a lot of things reading is still one of those things you can enjoy yourself, anywhere and anytime. Reading is a power that my son has all to himself to do with what he wants.”
Congratulations Rhiannon and Matthew! We can’t wait to hear the adventures you go on and the skills you develop through reading your new books.
