"Kumon's different from other places I've worked, knowing I'm part of a company that puts the education of children first keeps me motivated and makes me want to contribute more."
Area Manager - Manchester Regional Team
Prior to joining Kumon in 2005, my working life had followed the pattern of many of my peers who graduated at the end of the nineties – that being that there had been very little pattern to my working life at all! Following my bachelor's degree, I worked my way through a variety of different jobs and countries, with jobs such as the head of performing arts at an American summer camp, to teaching pedagogic methodology at a university in China.
Nearing the end of my twenties, I found myself back in the UK looking for a fresh challenge that would push me to develop myself further. I was also keen to continue my work within the field of education, and I wanted to ensure that I continued to be inspired and enthused by the work I was doing and who I was doing it for.
Most people, when asked who they work for, will give the name of their workplace. For me though, my work is entirely for the students at our study centres, and it's difficult to think of a more inspiring group of people to work for. My job as an Area Manager within Kumon requires me to use a wide variety of skills. One day I may be running one of our maths and English classes, whereas the next might entail delivering a presentation to a group of experienced Kumon Instructors. It's genuinely the case that no two days are the same, and as well as providing me with opportunities to stretch myself, I get great satisfaction from knowing that what I do has a direct impact on the education of children. What greater responsibility is there than that?
