The Kumon Edinburgh, Corstophine Study Centre, is dedicated to helping each child achieve their full potential by providing personalised maths and English programmes. Since we were established in 2019, our centre has offered a one-of-a-kind learning experience where students begin their Kumon journey at their own level and progress at their own pace. This individualised approach is the key to their success, and many students not only surpass their grade level but also thrive in school, gain confidence, and become independent learners.

We aim to maintain open communication with parents to ensure that learning objectives are being met, encouraging students to attend two classes per week, which can be either face-to-face, online or a combination of both. We also take great pride in recognising and celebrating student achievements and regularly hold award and merit ceremonies to acknowledge their progress.

Our dedicated team consists of both in-centre and online staff members who are committed to supporting the students' development. This team includes experienced schoolteachers, Kumon parents who have witnessed the benefits first-hand, current Kumon students who serve as mentors, and accomplished programme Completers who inspire and motivate the students.

About the Instructor

My name is Kanika Paterson and I am proud to have been the Kumon Instructor at the Edinburgh, Corstorphine study centre since 2019. Before this role, I had the privilege of working as an area manager in the Kumon Scotland region, however, my journey as a Kumon Instructor began in 2004 as the founding member of Kumon India. I had the honour of opening the very first Kumon centre there and later became an Instructor at a centre in New Delhi. Over the years, I have had amazing opportunities to receive training in various locations such as London, Japan, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand.

I have always been passionate about educating and motivating young people and was influenced by watching my mother inspire countless children as a school principal. It was this inspiration that led me to become a Kumon Instructor. My very first Kumon student was my nephew, who has now successfully completed both programs. Witnessing his academic growth and progress solidified my belief in the effectiveness of the Kumon method and its emphasis on individualised study.

My true passion lies in developing the confidence of and nurturing a love of learning in my students. With my extensive experience working with children, I offer a high level of expertise in unlocking their abilities and potential. I wholeheartedly recommend Kumon as a platform to cultivate confident and resourceful students who can excel in any field they choose.

I am always available to discuss what the Kumon Method of Learning can do for your child, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
