"I believe Kumon is the reason why my maths has improved, and without it I wouldn't have achieved an A in my GCSE maths and wouldn't have even attempted A-level!"
At the study centre, the Instructor will observe and assess each child at work. Students must display a good level of fluency and accuracy and take an achievement test before advancing to the next topic.
With the maths programme in particular, Kumon will present a way to complete a specific task. The method used will always involve the student completing mental arithmetic, as this is core to our technique. Our Instructors are sensitive in their approach however, and will inform children that at school, or through a private tutor, they may be presented with different ways of completing the same task. By setting children's expectations in this way they are much more accepting of varying methods of reaching the same goal and any possible confusion is nipped in the bud.
Despite its supplementary nature, Kumon differs from tutoring in that it has a long-term focus. Typically, tutoring has a short-term focus (preparing children for specific entrance exams; 'crash courses' for those who struggle, etc.). Both approaches have their place in education, but we believe Kumon offers additional benefits such as building self-confidence, concentration and perseverance through short periods of daily study.
As Kumon students progress through their chosen study programme, they will grow in confidence and often completely change their attitude to learning. Maths may suddenly become their favourite subject or they may develop a love of reading. There will be marked improvements in concentration, and children should feel more comfortable in facing new information or new challenges. The extra practice and development of study skills which Kumon offers facilitates these advances.
