"It is highly rewarding to be a part of young people's success and to hear reports from school of how they are advancing and often outperforming their peers."
Cath Muscroft, Instructor of the Golborne Study Centre

Five year olds excel at maths and English

Amey GantiFive year old students at the Rugby Kumon study centre are solving maths problems designed for seven year olds and surpassing expectations by progressing rapidly through the organisation's programme.

While recent government figures suggest that four out of ten primary school pupils are below the national average in basic literacy and numeracy by the time they're 11, a large percentage of Kumon students buck this trend. The organisation, which provides maths and English study programmes, helps develop independent self-learners. Tackling and repeating exercises without assistance to arrive at the correct answer is at the heart of this method, and builds confidence in all Kumon students.

The statistics show that standards in listening, reading and science have slipped but five year old Rugby students, Nishanth Selvara, Pirranavi Arulsabesan and Amey Ganti who study maths and English, are all demonstrating a thorough grasp of numbers and a flair for reading.

Rozina Sayani, Instructor, Rugby Study Centre, Kumon Educational UK said:
"I am very proud of these early learners and their progress is a great example to the children that attend class. Nishanth's numerical competency is significantly above his school level and after winning a silver, Advanced Student Level Award (ASR) is on course to win a gold ASR. He also reads with good accuracy and expression. Pirranavi has become an avid reader and relishes it too. She was recently chosen to read stories to a crowd of parents and students on a parents' day and received the Headteacher's award. Amey Ganti, another early learner, is progressing at a rapid rate too and by September is expected to be learning about aspects of comprising, understanding and sequencing sentences."

Critics claim that many children are falling behind at school during the early years and are failing to catch up. Naturally, many parents turn to additional education providers to ensure that their children develop the necessary study skills. By offering affordable programmes to help students master the fundamentals of maths and English, Kumon's daily worksheets and Instruction can help in this process and also complement the school curriculum.

Students and parents across the UK and Ireland can now experience Kumon maths and English programes without any initial financial commitment. From 21 August to 20 October, Kumon is running a two-week Free Trial that is open to all children in the UK and Ireland.
