About this centre

The centre opened in 2010 and offers maths and English study programmes.

Students at the centre mainly come from the Gateshead area and range in age from four to 16 years old, although Kumon caters for children of all ages and abilities. Some attend the local schools and some travel a little further afield to schools in Newcastle. The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.

The Instructor at the centre, Liz Burrin, has a team of assistants at the centre; some of whom have studied or are studying the Kumon programmes themselves.

Our intensive 'study skills area' allows new students to settle in well to Kumon, as well as learn essential study skills for life. Students are moved to the independent area of the room when they have gained sufficient skills to work independently through challenging worksheets.

Kumon should not be considered a traditional tuition provider as, rather than ‘teaching’ students, we encourage them to become independent learners who feel confident in their own abilities and able to face unfamiliar work.

My name is Liz Burrin and I am the Instructor at the Kumon Gateshead - Low Fell Study Centre. Having trained and worked in Newcastle as a physiotherapist, and later as a medical representative for a pharmaceutical company, I became a full time mother when my eldest daughter was born.

I discovered the Kumon Method and we enrolled my daughter on the Kumon Maths Programme. We never looked back and subsequently, in the years that followed, enrolled our four younger children as soon as they entered reception at school.

I had seen the phenomenal difference both academically and personally that the programme had made to our own children and still feel a real passion for every child to reach their full potential.

I have instructed hundreds of children in the Kumon Method, many of them reaching the very high levels of the programme and some going on to complete the programme to A-level standard equivalent work, often working on material that is well advanced beyond their school age.

With my own five children having studied both the maths and English programmes, nobody has better experience of telling you the commitment we ask at Kumon, but it is so worthwhile and rewarding when you see what your child can achieve.
