The Kumon Northampton South Study Centre was established in 2006 and more recently Ofsted registered in 2017. This centre offers children of all ages and abilities with the appropriate guidance and instruction to develop independent, advanced, self-learning skills, enabling them to tackle challenging work without reliance on a teacher.

This centre enjoys a quiet study environment and currently supports pre-schoolers from three years of age upwards. We also support primary, secondary and A-level students. The class assistants are fully trained and encouraged to ensure that each student reaches their full potential. Priority is given to pre-schoolers who commence study at 3.30pm. There is also a time slotting system with a controlled sign-in and sign-out class register.

Whilst at the centre, there are a range of books from the Kumon Recommended Reading List that students can read to complement their worksheet study. Students are also encouraged to bring in their own reading materials.

Regular parent communications are held during the year in order to discuss students’ progress and to share study projections. The Instructor will set goals for all students to determine a clear benchmark and this is reviewed periodically throughout the student’s individual Kumon journey.

The centre also hosts an annual award ceremony to honour students working beyond school grade level. This is a great form of recognition and also provides an inspirational and motivational platform.

About the Instructor

My name is Berta Rapoz and I have been running the Kumon Northampton South Study Centre for 17 years.

My very first experiences of working with young children was in the methods of Maria Montessori and Friedrich Froebel as applied to Kindergarten teaching.  I later succeeded in applying these teachings to my two sons. I have always had a strong passion, love and curiosity for fundamental education.

I was also quite familiar with the Kumon Method of Learning and initially became a Kumon parent whilst working in the legal profession within a busy corporate environment.

It was whilst observing my sons do well in their school work that made me realize how Kumon’s individualised advanced study programme had shaped them into confident, self-independent learners and subsequently empowered them to the success they are embracing today as young adults. I am very proud of my sons. This powerful tool of learning then strongly convinced me to introduce the Kumon programme to my local community.

My centre has nurtured several high level maths achievers, seven English completers; one as young as ten years of age and this is a huge testament to these hard working students. In addition, a significantly large number of young students are continually achieving awards for studying GSCE maths and English material before they enter secondary education.

It is extremely rewarding for me when my students flourish and parents are able to highlight the groundwork of their belief and success.

Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
