Alice Shearing is a relatively new student at the York, Fulford Study Centre, having started on the Kumon Maths Programme in March 2014.

Even though she has not been there long, her mother Sharon has already noticed positive changes, not only in her mental maths, but her overall confidence. She told us all about her excitement for what the future might bring.

Sharon says: “Alice’s primary school classes are very big, with around 30-35 children per class. I enrolled her at Kumon as I liked the idea of her doing a bit of work every day, so she got into a good habit of self-study and being an independent learner.

“Kumon has helped Alice increase in confidence. In the past I’d have to go into class with her and now she will go in on her own, get her folder and do her work. The assistants at the centre have been fantastic to her and she looks up to them. Since being at Kumon she has been getting her numbers the right way round, thinking more and she is quicker at mental maths, such as 6×6. She now does lots more working out in her head than she did before. At first she could not do maths very quickly but now it’s more natural and she is doing it by herself.

“Before Kumon I was told that Alice was not achieving in maths. Now, Alice’s teacher at school says she is more vocal and she recently achieved full marks for all efforts in maths. She is now at expected level in maths, which is fantastic. Her teachers comment about how enthusiastic she is about her maths; she’s very keen.

“In the future it will mean Alice has the whole package; good learning skills and independence. At Kumon, the children are focussed and study hard – when Alice sees the other children at class doing this she follows suit and wants to learn. The techniques she has learnt at Kumon can be used for different things.

“It’s vital to have a global education and Kumon is internationally recognised. It will help her wherever she wants to work. There are different ways to do things and as parents we need to try to get them into different work environments. Kumon allows Alice to have no gaps in her learning.”
