Mary Poppins gives away 100 books at special Kumon event

1 August, 2014

On Sunday 6 July, Kumon brought Mary Poppins back to St Paul’s Cathedral in London. This time she was handing out 100 free copies of the book bearing her name to the children of London!

As part of the Kumon Summer Festival of Reading, and our partnership with the National Literacy Trust, we sponsored a Mary Poppins themed Book Bench.

This video shows Mary Poppins animatedly handing these books out, and children excitedly telling us about their encounters with her. Children, Amelia and Alyssa had even made the effort to write Mary Poppins a letter ahead of their visit!

The book bench forms part of a path of similar benches lining the streets of London. There are four trails in total, each with their own trail quiz. Mary Poppins is part of the City Trail which contains a number of other books on the Kumon Recommended Reading List.

Hattie and her family visited the book bench specifically to meet Mary Poppins and receive her special free book. Hattie had this to say about Mary: “She was chatty and friendly and she was really nice. I think if I were to be a friend of hers, it would be a really nice feeling.”

Hattie went on to tell us that they would enjoy the book as a family and they would most likely start reading it that evening. We hope you have enjoyed the book, Hattie!

The event attracted a fantastic turn out and the children were delighted to meet the star of the show, especially as she entrusted them with her magic umbrella and invited them to join her in a song! What a fun way to bring literature to the children of London and to encourage children to read for pleasure whilst engaging with a beloved character.
