My goal is to be able to impact each student in my centre for the better

"I would describe my role as a Kumon Instructor as fulfilling and gratifying."

Since 2001 Kumon has been a pivotal part of Folasade Alasi's life as she's moved from Kumon Instructor, to Kumon parent, and back to Kumon Instructor. We spoke with Folasade to find out a bit more about her experience.

She said: "I first heard about Kumon from a friend who had enrolled her children on the maths programme. She spoke constantly about how well they were doing in school such as being entered in for national maths competitions. I enquired about the programme to see whether it would be the right fit for my children, then aged three and one, and was very impressed with the structure it provided. I also observed that I did not have a local centre at the time so I applied to set one up."

Following a successful application and intense training Folasade established the Kumon Grays Study Centre in 2001, with her children its first ever students.

She added: "Coming from a background in Architecture/Construction Project Management, a role in education may not appear to be a logical career move. However, with the demands of two young boys and an ardent desire to provide them with a very good education, Kumon provided the structure and flexibility I needed. I started my centre with my two boys and saw it grow significantly within the first few years."

After five rewarding years fostering students to reach their potential Folasade decided to sell the centre.

A few short years later however, Folasade was attracted back to the business when she saw that the Kumon Upminster Study Centre had gone up for sale; and, in January 2011 she became the new Instructor in Upminster.

The study centre has since doubled in size and Folasade is pleased to be able to offer the Kumon programmes to more and more local children and their families, and see them reaping the rewards. She said: "My goal is to be able to impact each student in my centre for the better, and in the process, get more students in through my door.

"I have seen many newly enrolled students walk into the centre disorganised and completely lacking in confidence. I watch the same students a few months later walking around with their heads held high and prepared to take on the world! The main change is in what they now believe they can do. I find this intensely fulfilling.

"I enjoy the relationships I have built, the trust of the families and the confidence exuded by the students when they are able to solve a problem they originally thought was impossible independently!"

Folasade is learning each and every day alongside her students and over the years has developed in her role and in her instruction. She said: "I have garnered a deeper understanding of the programmes, and continue to learn from my students each class day, meaning I am continually growing in my ability to identify a student's areas of weakness, and effectively guide them to mastery, encouraging their self-learning skills along the way.

"I would describe my role as a Kumon Instructor as fulfilling and gratifying; I am able to nurture my own deep passion for education whilst bringing out the best in each student I am privileged enough to work with, not simply academically but in every corner of their life."
