About this centre
The Kumon Jesmond Study Centre offers maths and English programmes to children from three years of age through to A-level students. The centre is popular with children from the surrounding schools in the area, and we also have students who travel from as far as County Durham. The centre has been established for almost ten years. Many of our students have been studying the Kumon programmes for several years and are a testament to how much their daily Kumon practice supports their academic progress.
Our goal is for each student to become a confident, independent self-learner. We use the classroom as a ‘training ground’ to develop key skills and abilities, as well as academic learning. Alongside the Instructor Natalie, there is a team of fully trained tutors who guide each student to help them achieve their very best.
The centre has a designated early-learner area for our younger students to receive more one-to-one support. We also aim to encourage a passion for reading in all of our students, with books available for them to read in class from Kumon’s Recommended Reading List.
The achievements and accomplishments of our students are recognised daily at our centre. We want our students to leave each class day feeling ‘smarter’ and more confident in their abilities. Each year we hold a ceremony to celebrate and recognise students’ outstanding achievements.
Most of our students attend the Kumon Jesmond Study Centre once per week. We recommend once you have established a daily routine, we can then discuss attending a second-class session.
My name is Natalie Taylor and I’ve been a Kumon Instructor since September 2012, when I established the Kumon Jesmond Study Centre.
I’ve lived in Jesmond for over 20 years, since coming to Newcastle to study at university. I obtained a first class degree in Mathematics and went on to teach maths in secondary schools.
Being a Kumon Instructor is a fantastic job. It's wonderful to see children grow in confidence when they realise they can use their own knowledge and ability to learn a challenging new concept for themselves. It’s so rewarding to see children develop as individuals, who can organise and prioritise their time, and manage their Kumon homework around their schoolwork and other commitments; skills which are invaluable at school, university and throughout life.
Having instructed hundreds of students and observed their maths, English, concentration and study skills improve, I’m continually impressed by what children can achieve once they’ve been given the necessary skills.
I want to ensure that each student at the Kumon Jesmond Study Centre is valued and supported to enable them to reach their potential. As well as tailored instruction, I offer regular progress meetings with parents to discuss each student’s past, present and future progress and goals. It is important that we continue to work together to ensure your child has the appropriate support and develops a positive attitude towards studying.
I look forward to working with you and your children to help them reach their full potential.

Most Popular Questions
Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.
Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.
As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.
As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
