The centre has been providing the Kumon Maths Programme since 1999 and the Kumon English Programme since 2002. The majority of students at the centre live in Abingdon or the surrounding villages and attend local schools, although a few travel from further away.
Students typically attend the centre once a week for 30-45 minutes if they are studying one subject or about an hour if they are studying both subjects. Most of the students are aged between four and 16 years old, but all ages abilities are catered for. The centre is diverse, with students from a range of ethnic backgrounds.
Most students stay at the centre for about two years but a few become long-term students and are able to benefit from studying the higher levels of the programmes.
The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.
Kumon should not be considered a traditional tuition provider as, rather than ‘teaching’ students, we encourage them to become independent learners who feel confident in their own abilities and able to face unfamiliar work.
