About our centre

We are offering Free Registration to all new students joining the centre until 30 June 2026.

Established in 2005, the centre welcomes students of all ages and abilities. The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes help each child fulfil their potential by developing confident, independent learners through personalised, advanced study.

Students from more than 40 different schools attend the centre. While the majority are local, others travel from further afield, including Newtownabbey and the Strangford Peninsula. Currently, students range in age from four to 16 years old, and all are making progress in maths, English, or both. Regular commitment to the programme is already boosting many students’ confidence and self-esteem, and some have made dramatic improvements in their abilities since enrolling.

The amount of time spent in class varies depending on whether a student studies one or both subjects. Typically, students spend around 20–30 minutes per subject in class. Each student is welcomed by a receptionist, and five additional assistants are on hand to support every child’s learning and development.

At Kumon, we encourage students to become independent learners who are confident in their own abilities and capable of tackling unfamiliar work and new challenges. These are valuable skills that benefit them in every area of life.

Parking is readily available on the Upper Newtownards Road, and there is also a public car park on Sandown Road.

Kerry McCallum

About your Instructor

Kumon has been a part of my life for over 20 years. I first joined as a student when my mum opened the Kumon Ballyhackamore Study Centre in 2005. Later, while studying at university, I worked as an assistant both at this centre and at a Kumon centre in Galway. Today, I am proud and excited to be the Instructor of the Kumon Belfast, Ballyhackamore Study Centre.

I have always been passionate about education and helping children reach their full potential. Through seven years of experience as a Maths teacher in England, alongside my long-standing involvement with Kumon, I have seen first-hand how children can develop not only their academic abilities but also their confidence, independence, and resilience.

I am committed to creating a positive and supportive learning environment where every student can thrive. I look forward to continuing to encourage and support students on their learning journey, helping them to build strong foundations and achieve their goals both in and beyond the classroom.

Frequently Asked Questions

Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
