The centre opened in 1997 and is now well established in North Lincolnshire. The study centre is located in St. Mary’s Church Hall, Barnard Avenue (and its car park is accessible from Ash Grove) and is easily accessible on foot and by public transport. The venue is opposite the local bus station and has a number of local schools which are just a short walk away.
The unique Kumon Maths and English programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.
Kumon should not be considered a traditional tuition provider as, rather than ‘teaching’ students, we encourage them to become independent learners who feel confident in their own abilities and able to face unfamiliar work.
The youngest student currently studying at the centre is five years old and the oldest is 15. However, Kumon is available to students of all ages and abilities.
The Instructor of the centre is supported by six class assistants, of which two are previous Kumon students and one is still studying the Kumon programmes. The assistants support with the marking and recording of students’ work, working with newly-enrolled students and early learners, supplementary activities such as using the Numberboards and listening to students read.
There is a separate waiting area for parents and siblings, and there is an attendance book in the waiting room for parents to sign their child into the centre. There is also a notice board that provides up-to-date class news for parents as well as serving as a motivational tool to encourage students to complete their work on a daily basis. In addition, the Instructor sends a monthly newsletter to all students’ parents telling them about the students’ progress and any other news about the centre.
