During the lockdowns of 2020, the Kumon Bristol Redland Study Centre supported over one hundred local children with daily worksheet provision and weekly video classes. For many of our students, Kumon was at the core of their learning for the many months in which their schooling was disrupted. This provision during the pandemic followed more than ten years of the Centre providing high-quality individualised learning programmes for children of all ages and abilities. We are a well-established local education provider.

Since September 2021, we have been pleased to provide blended learning – in-centre classes and online classes. Students are welcome to attend once a week in person and once a week online. We look forward to continuing to provide a high-quality individualised education to all.

Students attend the Centre in person once a week for a thirty-minute appointment and have a short piece of work to complete each day at home as well. A maximum of four students are in the Centre at any one time; they work independently, two metres apart from other students and staff. We use technical solutions to ensure that students receive the individual instruction and guidance they need while maintaining a safe distance. We continue to ensure that fresh air circulates throughout the Centre and we clean surfaces and touch points regularly.

Our online classes also last for thirty minutes and contain a maximum of four students at one time. Some families choose to attend online only - either for reasons of convenience or geography.

Operating from dedicated, permanent premises just off Whiteladies Road, we are committed to discovering the potential of each child and guiding them to develop the skills and knowledge that will nurture confidence and a love of learning. We believe each child is unique, full of potential and able to learn far beyond our expectations.

Parents sometimes mention that they appreciate the way the Centre has high standards and is aspirational without being “pushy”.

About the Instructor

Instructor Al Shaw of the Bristol Redland centre

Guiding others to learn has always been an important part of my life. After nearly 20 years of working in the charitable sector, I joined Kumon as an Area Manager, supporting study centres in the West of England. This experience opened my eyes in a new way to the power of individualised learning. The combination of guided self-study, individualised instruction and world-class materials was a powerful one.

Inspired by what I saw, in 2008 I became the first Kumon employee in the UK to take the step of opening my own Kumon centre as a dedicated Instructor. I have not looked back. It's been a really interesting and rewarding journey. I appreciate the quality of the learning materials and the fact that children's learning is always the focus within Kumon. I appreciate the fact that children actually master the subject, rather than just gaining a superficial knowledge of it.

In later life, the ability of our students to teach themselves whatever they need to or want to learn is one that will be of great value to them, as human knowledge continues to increase dramatically. I very much enjoy enabling children to progress as far as they can through guided self-learning.

I look forward to meeting your family and exploring the ways in which Kumon could help your child to grow in confidence and skills.

Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
