The centre was opened in 1997 and is now a thriving and important part of the local community. The majority of students live in the local area and attend local schools, while other students travel from surrounding areas on the outskirts of Chelmsford.
The venue caters for a substantial number of students and has its own, free parking facility. There is a designated room for parents to wait while their children attend the centre.
Students are of all ages and abilities; at present, the youngest student is four years old and the oldest student is 16. Ability levels of the students range from very high to those who struggle with maths and English.
The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study. A highly dedicated team of staff help in the running of the centre, making sure that students achieve their goals on every visit. The study centre is split into three separate zones: an early learners’ area, an area for newly-enrolled students, and an area for independent learners. This allows us to nurture the skills required for the key transition to independence. Early learners and newly-enrolled students receive guided self-study from a member of the team, in both written and oral work.
Kumon should not be considered a traditional tuition provider; rather than ‘teaching’ students, we encourage them to become independent learners who are ultimately able to face unfamiliar work with confidence, as well as challenges in the wider world.
