The centre was started in 2004 by Jeremy Collis, the current Instructor. Classes take place in the hall adjacent to St Anne’s Church off St Ann’s Hill, a short walk from both Garratt Lane and Wandsworth High Street, along which run frequent buses.
As well as the Instructor, there are six class assistants in the centre. These are all DBS checked and include teaching assistants from local schools and graduates from the University of Cambridge and the University of Reading in the UK and from Columbia University in the USA.
Students at the centre come from primary and secondary schools as well as private schools, some of which are amongst the best academic schools in the UK. The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.
Kumon should not be considered a traditional tuition provider as, rather than ‘teaching’ students, we encourage them to become independent learners who feel confident in their own abilities and able to face unfamiliar work.
The classes take place in the main hall and there is a separate room where parents and guardians can wait. When the weather is nice, many parents prefer to stay outside on the church steps or under the trees.
The atmosphere in class is friendly but studious and students are given a drink and biscuit when the have completed their work.
At the centre there is ample parking space in adjacent roads, which are metered up until 4.30pm and free thereafter.
