The centre was founded in 1995 and has since been offering maths and English programmes for children in the local area and further afield. After originally operating from community centres and a church hall, the East Dulwich Study Centre recently moved to a high-street location, becoming Kumon's very first permanent premises in London.
The centre is open five times a week so parents and students have a wide variety of choice on which day(s) to attend class. There is a large, comfortably furnished foyer where parents and siblings wait for students to complete their work. Parents and younger siblings can relax with films, toys, tea and coffee whilst they wait.
The centre overlooks a large park where parents can get some fresh air whilst the students are in class and there are many free parking side streets around the location of the centre.
There are separate classrooms for the early learners and independent learners and classes are held in a quiet atmosphere. The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised advanced study.
Unlike the process of a traditional tuition provider, Kumon encourages students to take their learning into their own hands. The role of the Kumon Instructor is to provide guidance, support and encouragement, allowing the student to develop their own independent learning strategies.
There are about 15 class assistants and on each class day, there are at least five present in the main class and two in the early learner zone.
