The centre has been open since 1995, offering both maths and English study programmes. It is now a thriving and important part of the local community.
At the centre, there are students of all abilities and ages, ranging presently from four to 14 years old.
Students generally attend once a week, and each class visit lasts approximately 30 minutes per subject. During this time, parents are welcome to wait downstairs in the library, where tea and coffee are available.
The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study. The team of six assistants and the study centre Instructor are on hand at class to offer support and encouragement. Students following the English study programme will read aloud to an assistant and students following the maths study programme will practice times-tables when appropriate during class too.
The Instructor sees each student while they are at class on a one-to-one basis to give feedback and to help and to discuss goals and progress.
The atmosphere is always positive and encouraging. The students very quickly become familiar with the routine of the class.
Unlike the process of a traditional tuition provider, Kumon encourages students to take their learning into their own hands. The role of the Kumon Instructor is to provide guidance, support and encouragement, allowing the student to develop their own independent learning strategies.
