The study centre was opened in 2012 and is based in the small hall of the Methodist Church. There is a kitchen that is used as a waiting area by parents whilst their children are studying in the hall. Free tea and coffee making facilities are provided.
Six parking spaces in the church grounds can be used by parents and there are further unrestricted parking spaces in nearby Earlshall Road.
The youngest student at the centre is currently three years old and the oldest is 15, but the study centre welcomes students of all ages and abilities. About a third of the students at the centre study one of the Kumon programmes, with the rest doing both the maths and English programmes.
All students at the centre, including those on the maths programme only, are encouraged to read during every class. There is a range of books at the centre that students can read to complement their worksheet study.
Apart from the study centre Instructor, there is a senior assistant, two assistants and a receptionist. All have been DBS checked. Staff support the students’ development on both of the programmes, as well as listen to every student studying the English programme read from the worksheets or from a book. There is a friendly and informal atmosphere during the classes.
Students at the centre are rewarded for successes in their studies with an awards ceremony.
Unlike the process of a traditional tuition provider, Kumon encourages students to take their learning into their own hands. The role of the Kumon Instructor is to provide guidance, support and encouragement, allowing the student to develop their own independent learning strategies.
