The centre has been open since the beginning of 2012 and is run by Gill Park, an experienced Instructor.
Kumon is suitable for children of all ages and abilities. Currently, students at the centre range in age from four to 18 years old. The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident learners through individualised, advanced study. Many Fenham students study both maths and English, although some just concentrate on one subject.
The centre runs from St James' and St Basil's Hall which is situated on the corner of Wingrove Road North, with Ravenside Road. It is a lovely Grade 2 Listed Arts and Craft Hall. There is a large hall which can accommodate many students, an upstairs room for parents and siblings to wait in, and toilet facilities. The centre is situated in a largely residential area so parking near the centre is free.
The Fenham Study Centre is within walking distance of many of the local schools in Fenham, including Dame Allen's and Sacred Heart.
Although the majority of students live in the Fenham area, many travel from areas such as West Denton, Elswick and Westerhope, and other surrounding areas.
Unlike the process of a traditional tuition provider, Kumon encourages students to take their learning into their own hands. The role of the Kumon Instructor is to provide guidance, support and encouragement, allowing the student to develop their own independent learning strategies.
