The centre was established in 1995 and is located at the Methodist Church, opposite the Esso petrol station on Wey Hill. The current age range of students at the centre is four to 16 years old, however, Kumon is suitable for all ages and abilities. Many students at the centre have gone onto gain scholarships, pass entrance exams, go on to study A-level maths and go on to use the skills they have learnt at Kumon in further education.
Due to the centre being open for nearly three hours on class days, and due to the time each student stays, there are usually less than eight students in the hall at any one time. The classes run throughout the year including school holidays and children are expected to study every day and to do their corrections daily too.
Whilst in the centre, children will be observed, guided and if necessary, helped with their work. There are five excellent assistants at the centre who work alongside the Instructor to help mark and assist with these aspects of class.
There are good parking facilities available. The centre also has the benefit of a large, comfortable waiting area for parents to sit while their children are in class. The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.
Kumon should not be considered a traditional tuition provider as, rather than ‘teaching’ students, we encourage them to become independent learners who feel confident in their own abilities and able to face unfamiliar work.
