The Kumon Hull Cottingham Road Study Centre has been an established part of the community, helping local children to achieve their full potential, for over 10 years. Providing the Kumon Maths and English Study Programmes, we go beyond what traditional tuition offers to your children by helping children to develop self-learning skills; enabling them to tackle challenging work without relying on a teacher. Our aim is to help children of any ability to progress and develop a curiosity and love for learning.

Kumon aims to foster independent learners with the ability to comfortably study beyond their school grade level. Your child will visit the centre up to twice a week to receive guidance and their next steps from the Instructor, Andy. This allows him to observe their progress and fluency at each level, enabling him to tailor and adapt each child’s study plan to their abilities. Our study programmes are individualised for each child to help them establish strong learning foundations and have a positive learning experience; building skills and confidence for their future.

We currently have students aged 4 to 16 at the centre, although all ages are welcome. Our team, which has a range of specialities, includes four friendly, supportive and welcoming assistants.

About the Instructor

My name is Andrew Newman and I have been a Kumon Instructor in Hull since 2016. Prior to this, I worked with children and young adults for 20 years in a range of capacities, including outdoor education, special educational needs, youth work, and as a primary and middle school teacher.

The first time I walked into a Kumon class, I knew that acting as a Kumon Instructor would be a wonderful opportunity to use my skills and passion for the development of young learners. Kumon is an established and proven system of independent learning for all ages and abilities, and the mastery and confidence that students achieve through it really appeals to me. The potential for personal development and character building is such an intrinsic part of Kumon.

As a Kumon Instructor, I serve as a guide to my students, identifying their next steps and celebrating their achievements both academically and personally. The Kumon Method has been an inspiration to me and has supported my own desire to research learning and personal development in greater depth. I believe in its potential for all students and look forward to welcoming you to my centre where you too can experience the possibilities that Kumon offers.

Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
