The centre was established in February 2006 and is situated in Champion Hall on Champion Road. It has a convenient waiting area for parents/guardians.
The centre can be easily accessed from Sydenham Road and Mayow Road and is well served by local transport. There is unlimited free parking outside the hall as well as the surrounding roads.
The majority of students at the centre attend local schools and currently range from three to 16 years old, although the Kumon programme caters for children of all ages and abilities. Students attend class on a drop-in basis, arriving at a given time slot. Each class visit lasts approximately 20-30 minutes per subject.
Along with the Instructor, the centre has a receptionist and eight trained assistants to support and provide guidance where necessary. This includes English students reading to an assistant before completing their class work, although it is beneficial to both maths and English students to read on a regular basis.
The Instructor is available to give guidance to parents and students regarding their work, at class or via telephone at other times if required. The centre holds an annual award ceremony where the efforts and achievements of all students are formally recognised.
Unlike the process of a traditional tuition provider, Kumon encourages students to take their learning into their own hands. The role of the Kumon Instructor is to provide guidance, support and encouragement, allowing the student to develop their own independent learning strategies.
The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.
