The Kumon Middlesbrough Central Study Centre first opened its doors in 2016, and is continuing the long, successful heritage started by Toru Kumon almost 60 years ago. We extend a warm welcome to children of all ages and abilities; currently students range in age from four to 15 years old.
The study centre is held at ‘The Resource Centre’ on Meath Street. The building stands in its own grounds, with a lovely garden and outdoor seating to the rear of the building, and a large car park at the front. Parents can wait in the reception area, which is fully staffed while the centre is open.
The centre resides in the large meeting room, which provides a calm and ordered working environment to encourage optimum achievement. It is divided into three dedicated work areas: the ‘small group area’ where dedicated assistants work with new starters and children who require more support, an ‘independent work area’ for children who are more confident, and a ‘resource area’ that contains additional reading materials and number boards to further encourage independent learning.
The Instructor and assistants bring a wealth of experience to the centre. Some are fully qualified teachers and teaching assistants, and there are also team members who are currently studying child development at university. They provide support and guidance at all times, and there is a regular progress review for parents.
The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study. Unlike a traditional tuition provider, Kumon encourages students to take their learning into their own hands. The role of the Kumon Instructor is to provide guidance, support and encouragement, allowing the student to develop their own independent learning strategies.
